1966 brought a new, more attractive three-colour picture box with lift-off lid featuring a design very similar to the front cover of the 1965/1966 Catalogue but with a CN Diesel and four freight cars in the foreground and the silver and red Transcontinental Diesel with three coaches on the higher level track in the background. The inscription on the side of the box lid now read ‘DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA BY MECCANO-Tri-ang Ltd. TORONTO, ONTARIO’ On both the set box lid and the inner tray a dual language label, in English and in French, listing the set contents was affixed. The printing on the box inner trays, now all in black, was also revised.
The 'Tri-ang Railways' logo continued as did one short section of straight track but the publicity slogans were removed and replaced by an illustration of a crossing warning sign plus, dependent upon available space, a semaphore signal and / or a member of railway personnel carrying a lantern. |
1966 Specification Changes
Track PacksThe R.167 Track Pack with the more commonly found window box was introduced and was used in the vast majority of sets.
The R.454 Siding Set was first included in the CTS.662R Special Train Set.

Model 2200 Trainpack Transformer Control UnitThe PA.102C Transformer was replaced by the improved quality Model 2200 Transformer in the late-Autumn of 1966. The Tri-ang version of this transformer was made in Japan
(the later Meccano-Tri-ang version being manufactured in the USA). It had a 16 volts controlled DC output and 18 volts uncontrolled AC output. It is known that they were included in the Special Train Sets for that year and the later repackaged issue of the CTS.3 Set. |
The Naming of the 1965-1966 Sets
As with the numbering, the naming of Canadian sets can also be confusing. For instance, Set CTS.1 is referred to in a 1965 factory planning memo as 'No.1 - C.P. Steam Freight', in the 1965/1966 Canadian Catalogue as 'Steam Freighter Set ', in the Suggested Retail Price List - Canada 1965 as '4-6-2 "Pacific" Freight Set', in the Feb.18, 1966 Suggested Retail Price List - Canada as 'Pacific Freight Set' and in the later Suggested Retail Price List - Canada 1966 as 'Pacific Steam Engine, Freight Set'. In most cases there was little consistency in the naming of sets so, for simplicity and ease of reference, where there is significant variation, the name used in the 1965/1966 Canadian Catalogue is quoted first, followed by the name used in the Suggested Retail Price List - Canada 1965. |
