A fortuitous acquisition of a Hudson’s Bay Company advertisement from a Winnipeg newspaper has shed some new light on the 1960-1962 Special Sets for Canada. The advertisement, dated 9th November 1962, pictures what turned out to be the RSC.2 Special Set advertised as being 'Exclusive to "The Bay" from "Tri-Ang"!' So, this now confirms the date of the set (previously thought to be either 1961 or 1962) and for whom it was made. The fact that it was exclusive to the Hudson’s Bay Company comes as a bit of a surprise since Tri-ang Railways Special Sets for this company are few and far between and this is now the earliest recorded Special Set for their department stores and retail outlets; pre-dating their R.4 'Diesel Switcher Crash Rescue Set' by some two years. |

Well, I finally summoned up the courage to tackle the listing of the Canadian Passenger Cars.
The Canadian Pacific and the CP Rail Cars were straight forward enough but the Canadian National Cars proved a nightmare. I love Pat Hammond’s books on Tri-ang Railways, they are a ‘tour de force’, absolutely essential reading and our hobby just wouldn’t be the same without them, however, when Volume 2 was published in 1998 (can it really be that long ago?) there was much still to be discovered about the Canadian sets and models. The Canadian National Passenger Cars are a case in point; so far I have been able to record and photograph 15 different versions of these models. Potentially there may just be three more versions; the Canadian National Observation Car in silver and black with number 91119 and the Canadian National Passenger Car and Diner in silver and black both with number 70831. It is possible but not certain that these models may exist so, if anyone out there has an example, I would be extremely grateful to receive pictures and feature them on the website. |
