1965 - R.236 CN Depressed Center Car - CN brown - 41917 (without buffers)
These Depressed Center Cars were made exclusively for the Canadian market
(the CN brown is a slightly darker shade of brown than the model numbered '41913' below)
1965 - R.236 CN Depressed Center Car - brown - 41913 (without buffers)
These Depressed Center Cars were made from surplus Bogie Well Wagon bodies originally
manufactured for the Tank Load
The running number 41913 was previously unique to the R.241 Bogie Well Wagon with Tank Load (see below).
No other Depressed Center Cars or Bogie Well Wagons carried that number.
Note the English spelling of the word 'CENTRE' on the name label - which is far too long to fit on the box end-flap
R.236 Depressed Center Car - a Brief History 1960 - 1968
Essentially the Depressed Center Car is the R.118 Bogie Well Wagon without buffers.
The Depressed Center Car was introduced into the Tri-ang Railways Transcontinental range of models at the beginning of 1960 and featured in every Canadian Price List and Illustrated Price List until the end of 1964.
A bright green version of the model was illustrated both in the 1965/1966 and the 1967/1968 full-colour Canadian Catalogues but did not feature in any of the price lists of those periods.
Despite this, it is believed that the Depressed Center Car continued to be available in Canada as existing stocks were gradually depleted and, quite surprisingly, the model was included in a low cost 1968 Special Train Set No. AM 681.
The Depressed Center Car included in the 1968 Special Train Set No. AM 681 was numbered 41917 and was the last version of the model which had plastic bogies.
Sales of individual models were poor - you could say 'depressing' - with less than 1,500 ordered worldwide in 1962 and diminishing thereafter.
