RM.A Railways / Motorways Combination Set
During 1962 and 1963 a total of 3500 of these sets were assembled; a number of which were sent for export, primarily to North America.
|
First introduced in the Summer of 1962, the set retailed in the United Kingdom at £10.19s.6d. It was available for just two years, last appearing in the 1964 Tri-ang Railways Catalogue and the 1st January, 1964 Retail Price List, but had been withdrawn by 1965.
The set was originally advertised in an original publicity leaflet 'Supplement to R.280 Catalogue, Eighth Edition' as the 'RM.A DASH'N SMASH COMBINED RAILWAYS / MOTORWAYS SET'. |
RM.A Set in the USA
The RM.A Set was also advertised in the USA but with slightly different contents; the two maroon British Railways coaches being replaced by a Duo-tone Green Transcontinental Diner and Duo-tone Green Transcontinental Passenger Coach.
Note the position of the railway track on the level crossing in the picture: it is a pre-production model made up for photographic purposes and was never put into production. Also, the illustration bears no resemblance to the actual RM.A Set contents.
RM.A Set in Canada
The RM.A Set featured on the back page of the 'Suggested Retail Prices for Canada - August 1st, 1962' folder. Just a simple track plan was illustrated together with brief details of the set contents. The retail price was $46.95 Canadian and the M.P.1. Transformer for the set was an additional $10.95.
It seems highly likely that, as in the USA, the two maroon British Railways coaches were replaced by a Duo-tone Green Transcontinental Diner and Duo-tone Green Transcontinental Passenger Coach.

RM.B Combination Railways / Motorways Set
First scheduled for introduction in the Summer of 1963, the UK retail price for the set was £8.10s.0d.
The set appeared in the 1st September, 1963 Trade Price List and Order Form and was illustrated in the 1964 Tri-ang Railways Catalogue but had been withdrawn by 1965. About 1150 of these sets were made during the latter part of 1963 and 1964. The set was packaged in the 'cube' type box. |
RM.C Combination Railways / Motorways Set
The set was first listed in the 1st September, 1963 Trade Price List and Order Form at £9.19s.6d. and was illustrated in the 1964 Tri-ang Railways Catalogue.
About 2100 of these sets were made during the latter part of 1963 and 1964. The set is normally found in the 'cube' type box but the set has also been discovered in a flat set box, similar to those used for other train sets. The set had been withdrawn by 1965. |
The 1st May, 1964 Tri-ang Railways Order Form with Trade Prices listed all three 'Combination Trains and Motorway Sets' amongst the 'SETS TO BE DISCONTINUED IN 1965'.
